How do I scan a bill?
On iPhone or iPad: Open the app and tap the scan button. You can use your camera to photograph a bill, pick an image from your photo library, or upload a file from your device.
On Mac: Open the app and click the Open File button to select a PDF or image file. You can also drag a file directly from Finder onto the app window — even if the app is in the background. Barely Legible will extract the text and send it for analysis, then display a plain-language summary of your charges.
What types of documents does Barely Legible support?
Barely Legible is designed for bills, statements, and invoices — including medical bills, insurance explanations of benefits, utility bills, telecom bills, and similar documents. Both physical documents (photographed) and digital files (PDF, JPEG, PNG, HEIC) are supported.
Can I upload a file instead of taking a photo?
Yes. Barely Legible supports PDFs as well as image files (JPEG, PNG, HEIC). On iPhone and iPad, tap the upload button and select a file from your device. On Mac, click Open File or drag a file from Finder onto the app window. For text-based PDFs, Barely Legible extracts the text directly without OCR, which typically produces more accurate results. For scanned or image-only PDFs, the app automatically falls back to OCR.
Can I drag and drop files on Mac?
Yes. You can drag any supported file (PDF, JPEG, PNG, HEIC) from a Finder window directly onto Barely Legible — even if the app is running in the background. The app will come to the front and begin processing the file automatically.
Why did my scan fail or produce an incomplete result?
Scan quality depends on the clarity of the source document. For best results:
If the analysis result appears incorrect or incomplete, you can flag it using the feedback option on the results screen.
How do I report an incorrect analysis?
On the results screen, tap or click the feedback button to report an issue. You'll be asked to select a category describing what was wrong and can optionally add a note. The sheet also includes an optional toggle to include your extracted bill text with the report — this helps us improve accuracy but is entirely your choice. We will not store your bill text without your explicit consent.
Where can I view my past scans?
Your scan history is available in the History tab. Past analyses are stored securely and accessible as long as your account is active.
How do I sign in?
Barely Legible uses Sign in with Apple exclusively. Tap or click "Sign in with Apple" on the welcome screen to create or access your account. Apple may offer you the option to hide your email address using a private relay address.
How many free scans do I get?
Every account includes 3 free scans per month. Your free scan count resets at the start of each calendar month. Once you've used your free scans, you can purchase additional credits or subscribe for unlimited scans at any time.
What subscription options are available?
Barely Legible offers two subscription plans for unlimited scans:

Can I buy scans without subscribing?
Yes. If you prefer not to subscribe, you can purchase scan credits individually or in a 5-scan pack. Credits do not expire and are consumed after your free monthly scans are used. Credit pricing is displayed in the app.
How do I cancel my subscription?
Subscriptions are managed through Apple. To cancel:
On Mac, go to the App Store, click your account name, and choose Manage Subscriptions. Cancellation takes effect at the end of your current billing period. We are not able to process cancellations or refunds directly — all billing is handled by Apple.
Can I get a refund?
All purchases and subscriptions are processed by Apple. Refund requests must be submitted directly to Apple at reportaproblem.apple.com.
Does Barely Legible store my bill images?
No. Bill images are processed entirely on your device and are never uploaded or stored. Only the extracted text is sent for analysis, and that text is not retained unless you explicitly consent to it as part of submitting feedback.
What data does Barely Legible store?
We store the analysis results (plain-language summaries) associated with your account so you can access your scan history. We do not store your original bill images or extracted bill text unless you explicitly consent to this when submitting feedback.
How do I delete my account and data?
To request account deletion and removal of all associated data, please contact us at the email address below. We will process your request within 30 days. Note that deleting your account is permanent and cannot be undone.
