These Terms of Service ("Terms") constitute a legally binding agreement between you ("you" or "user") and Jason Johnson, doing business as Barely Legible ("we," "us," or "our"), governing your access to and use of the Barely Legible mobile and desktop application and any related services (collectively, the "Services").
By downloading, installing, or using the Services, you agree to be bound by these Terms. If you do not agree, do not use the Services.
In Short: Barely Legible is a personal-use bill-analysis app for iOS and macOS.
Barely Legible is a personal-use application that allows you to photograph financial bills — including medical bills, utility bills, insurance statements, and similar documents — and receive plain-English explanations of their contents. The Services use artificial intelligence to parse and interpret the text of your bills. The Services are intended for personal, non-commercial use only.
The Services do not constitute financial, legal, or medical advice. Explanations provided by the app are for informational purposes only. You should consult qualified professionals regarding any decisions based on your bills.
The Services are distributed through the Apple App Store and are subject to Apple's App Store Review Guidelines and Media Services Terms and Conditions.
In Short: You must be 18 or older to use Barely Legible.
The Services are intended for users who are at least 18 years of age. By using the Services, you represent and warrant that you are 18 years of age or older and have the legal capacity to enter into these Terms. If you are under 18, you may not use the Services.
In Short: You sign in with Apple. Keep your account secure.
Authentication is handled exclusively through Sign in with Apple. By using Sign in with Apple, you are subject to Apple's Terms of Service. We do not store passwords.
You are responsible for maintaining the security of your Apple ID and for all activity that occurs under your account. You agree to notify us immediately at support@barelylegible.app if you suspect any unauthorized access to your account.
We reserve the right to suspend or terminate accounts that violate these Terms.
In Short: Subscriptions are billed through Apple and auto-renew unless cancelled.
Certain features of the Services require a paid subscription. Subscription plans are offered on a monthly or annual basis. Pricing is displayed in the App Store prior to purchase in US dollars (USD) or your local App Store currency.
All purchases are processed through the Apple App Store using Apple's in-app purchase system. We do not collect or store your payment information directly. All billing is governed by Apple's Terms of Sale. Your subscription will automatically renew at the end of each billing period unless cancelled at least 24 hours before the renewal date.
By purchasing a subscription, you authorize Apple to charge your Apple ID account on a recurring basis at the applicable subscription rate.
We reserve the right to change subscription pricing at any time. Any price increase will be communicated in advance and will take effect at your next renewal date. Continued use of the Services after a price change constitutes your acceptance of the new price.
In Short: Free trials convert to paid subscriptions automatically at the end of the trial period.
We may offer a free trial for new subscribers. The duration of the free trial is displayed in the App Store at the time of sign-up. At the end of the free trial period, your subscription will automatically convert to a paid subscription and your Apple ID will be charged unless you cancel at least 24 hours before the trial ends.
Free trials are available only to new subscribers who have not previously held a subscription. We reserve the right to modify or discontinue free trial offers at any time.

You may cancel your subscription at any time by managing your subscriptions in your device settings:
Cancellation takes effect at the end of the current billing period. You will retain access to subscription features until the period ends. We are not able to process cancellations directly — all cancellations must go through Apple.
In Short: All purchases are final. Refund requests go through Apple.
Because Barely Legible is distributed through the Apple App Store, all purchases are subject to Apple's refund policy. We do not offer refunds directly. If you believe you are entitled to a refund, you must submit a refund request through Apple at reportaproblem.apple.com.
Subscriptions are non-refundable for the current billing period at the time of cancellation.
In Short: You get a personal, non-transferable license to use the app.
Subject to your compliance with these Terms, we grant you a limited, non-exclusive, non-transferable, revocable license to download and use the Barely Legible application on Apple-branded devices that you own or control, solely for your personal, non-commercial purposes.

This license is granted by Jason Johnson, doing business as Barely Legible, not by Apple. Apple is not responsible for the application or its content. In the event of a conflict between these Terms and Apple's App Store Terms of Service, Apple's terms will govern with respect to App Store usage. Apple has no obligation to provide maintenance or support services for the application.
In the event of any failure of the application to conform to any applicable warranty, you may notify Apple and Apple will refund the purchase price, if any, paid for the application. To the maximum extent permitted by law, Apple will have no other warranty obligations. Any claims arising from the application are our responsibility, not Apple's.
In Short: Use the app lawfully and as intended — don't abuse, reverse engineer, or misuse the Services.
You agree not to use the Services for any purpose that is unlawful, harmful, or prohibited by these Terms. Specifically, you agree not to:
We reserve the right to investigate and take appropriate action against anyone who, in our sole discretion, violates this Section, including terminating their account.
In Short: Your bill images are processed by an AI service to generate explanations. Health and financial data is handled with care.
The Services use third-party artificial intelligence technology, currently provided by Anthropic, PBC, to analyze the text extracted from your bill images and generate plain-English explanations. When you scan a bill, the extracted text is transmitted to Anthropic's API for processing. By using the Services, you consent to this processing.
AI-generated explanations are provided on an "as is" basis and may not be fully accurate. Do not rely on AI-generated output as a substitute for professional advice from a licensed medical billing specialist, attorney, or financial advisor. If you believe an explanation is incorrect, you may submit feedback through the app.
Because you may scan medical bills, the Services may process information that is considered health or medical data. We treat all bill data with the same level of care as sensitive personal information. We do not sell your bill data. We do not use your bill data to train AI models. Please review our Privacy Policy for full details on how we handle your data.
In Short: We welcome feedback on bill explanations. Feedback you submit may be used to improve the Services.
The Services include a mechanism for you to flag bill explanations as inaccurate. By submitting feedback, you grant us a non-exclusive, royalty-free, worldwide license to use that feedback — including the associated bill context — for the purpose of improving the accuracy and quality of the Services. Feedback you submit does not confer any intellectual property rights to you and will not be returned.
We do not accept unsolicited ideas or suggestions for new features outside of the in-app feedback mechanism. Any feedback submitted to us becomes our property.
In Short: The app and its content are our property. Your bill images remain yours.
The Services, including all software, text, graphics, logos, icons, and other content provided by us (excluding your bill content), are the exclusive property of Jason Johnson d/b/a Barely Legible and are protected by applicable intellectual property laws. Nothing in these Terms grants you any right, title, or interest in the Services beyond the limited license described in Section 8.
You retain all rights, title, and interest in the bill images and documents you submit to the Services. You grant us a limited, non-exclusive license to process your content solely as necessary to provide the Services to you.
"Barely Legible" and associated logos are trademarks of Jason Johnson. You may not use our trademarks without our prior written consent.
In Short: The Services are provided "as is." We make no guarantees about accuracy or uptime.
THE SERVICES ARE PROVIDED ON AN "AS IS" AND "AS AVAILABLE" BASIS WITHOUT WARRANTIES OF ANY KIND, WHETHER EXPRESS OR IMPLIED, INCLUDING BUT NOT LIMITED TO IMPLIED WARRANTIES OF MERCHANTABILITY, FITNESS FOR A PARTICULAR PURPOSE, AND NON-INFRINGEMENT. WE DO NOT WARRANT THAT THE SERVICES WILL BE UNINTERRUPTED, ERROR-FREE, OR FREE OF VIRUSES OR OTHER HARMFUL COMPONENTS. WE DO NOT WARRANT THE ACCURACY, COMPLETENESS, OR USEFULNESS OF ANY AI-GENERATED CONTENT PROVIDED THROUGH THE SERVICES.
Some jurisdictions do not allow the exclusion of implied warranties, so the above exclusion may not apply to you. In such cases, our warranties are limited to the minimum extent permitted by law.
In Short: Our liability is limited to what you paid us in the 12 months before the claim.
TO THE FULLEST EXTENT PERMITTED BY APPLICABLE LAW, IN NO EVENT SHALL JASON JOHNSON D/B/A BARELY LEGIBLE, ITS OFFICERS, EMPLOYEES, AGENTS, OR LICENSORS BE LIABLE FOR ANY INDIRECT, INCIDENTAL, SPECIAL, CONSEQUENTIAL, EXEMPLARY, OR PUNITIVE DAMAGES, INCLUDING BUT NOT LIMITED TO LOSS OF PROFITS, LOSS OF DATA, LOSS OF GOODWILL, OR SERVICE INTERRUPTION, ARISING OUT OF OR IN CONNECTION WITH THESE TERMS OR THE SERVICES, EVEN IF ADVISED OF THE POSSIBILITY OF SUCH DAMAGES.
OUR TOTAL CUMULATIVE LIABILITY TO YOU ARISING OUT OF OR RELATED TO THESE TERMS OR THE SERVICES SHALL NOT EXCEED THE GREATER OF (A) THE TOTAL AMOUNTS YOU HAVE PAID TO US IN THE TWELVE (12) MONTHS IMMEDIATELY PRECEDING THE CLAIM, OR (B) FIFTY US DOLLARS ($50.00).
Any claim you bring against us must be filed within one (1) year of the event giving rise to the claim, or such claim is permanently barred. Some jurisdictions do not allow limitations on liability, so these limitations may not apply to you.
You agree to defend, indemnify, and hold harmless Jason Johnson d/b/a Barely Legible and its officers, employees, and agents from and against any claims, damages, obligations, losses, liabilities, costs, or debt, and expenses (including attorney's fees) arising from: (a) your use of the Services; (b) your violation of these Terms; (c) your violation of any third-party rights, including any intellectual property or privacy rights; or (d) any content you submit through the Services.
In Short: Disputes are resolved through binding arbitration in Wisconsin. You waive your right to a jury trial or class action.
Before filing any formal dispute, you agree to first contact us at support@barelylegible.app and provide a written description of the dispute, the relief you are seeking, and your contact information. We will attempt to resolve the dispute informally within 30 days.
If informal resolution fails, any dispute, claim, or controversy arising out of or relating to these Terms or the Services shall be settled by binding arbitration administered by the American Arbitration Association ("AAA") under its Consumer Arbitration Rules. The arbitration shall be conducted in Waukesha County, Wisconsin, United States, or by video conference if agreed. Judgment on the arbitrator's award may be entered in any court of competent jurisdiction.
YOU AND WE AGREE THAT EACH MAY BRING CLAIMS AGAINST THE OTHER ONLY IN YOUR OR OUR INDIVIDUAL CAPACITY, AND NOT AS A PLAINTIFF OR CLASS MEMBER IN ANY PURPORTED CLASS OR REPRESENTATIVE PROCEEDING. If a court finds this waiver unenforceable, the arbitration agreement will not apply.
Either party may bring an individual action in small claims court. Either party may seek emergency injunctive relief from a court of competent jurisdiction to prevent irreparable harm pending arbitration.
These Terms shall be governed by and construed in accordance with the laws of the State of Wisconsin, United States, without regard to its conflict of law provisions. To the extent any dispute is not subject to arbitration, you consent to the exclusive jurisdiction of the state and federal courts located in Waukesha County, Wisconsin.
We reserve the right to update or modify these Terms at any time. When we make changes, we will update the "Last Updated" date at the top of this page. If the changes are material, we will notify you by email to the address associated with your account. Your continued use of the Services after the effective date of the revised Terms constitutes your acceptance of the changes.
